Exile to Graystone
The Stormwall Mountains
The Stormwalls are a tall range of forbidding mountains separating The Empire from the Dwarven lands of Gundinor. While many of the peaks (including the one Graystone is built into) are covered in ice and snow year round most of the mountains are habitable, if only by the hardiest of souls. The terrain largely consists of spruce-forested slopes, a few grassy areas above the treeline, and snowy peaks beyond that. A few major rivers start in the Stormwalls, and small streams and lakes dot the mountains. The range is rich in mineral resources, and several types of game animal roam the forests and alpine tundra above the treeline.
However, many types of dangerous animal also stalk the Stormwalls. Many normal beasts are present, such as bears, wyverns, wolves, giant spiders, and the like. There is one threat, though, that is unique to the Stormwall mountains and parts of the island of Asaheim. Known as Snow Shrykes, they are feathered avians that hunt in small packs of 3-5 creatures. While not terribly dangerous in combat, they have a unique feature that makes them particularly dangerous to anyone travelling in the Stormwalls. The sting of the Snow Shryke contains a venom which raises the temperature at which substances freeze. When stung by a Shryke, those wandering the cold mountains will quickly succumb to frostbite, hypothermia, and, eventually, death by freezing. The Shryke pack will follow stung prey for miles, waiting for this to happen before they feed.
